Checklist for hiring a London food photography studio

Do you need a prep kitchen? Some studios also have a secondary kitchen on-site which will allow you to save time by preparing food simultaneously while shooting.

Do you need moveable kitchen units? Some central islands are on wheels and can be moved around the studio to allow you more shooting options.

What kitchen equipment do you need? It’s important to know in advance so you can check with the host whether the kitchen equipment is included in the hire fee or you can hire it at an additional cost, or whether you’ll need to bring your own.

What style of hob do you need? A kitchen could have a gas, electric or induction hob. If this information isn’t provided in the studio’s description you can message the host to check.

How much space will you require? This will depend on how large your team is, but make sure there is a break area and a kitchen/refreshment making facilities for them. If you have models you’ll need to check that there is a changing room/hair & beauty station.

Do you need to keep food cool? If you have meltable foods, you’ll need to check that the studio is temperature controlled to avoid food products becoming too hot or cold.

What are your background options? Consider whether the kitchen provides the background textures and colours to suit your style of shoot, for example, rustic wood or sleek marble countertops. Some photography studios with kitchens also offer infinity coves or coloured backdrops in the studio hire fee, these are both good options if you require a simple backdrop.

What are your power requirements? Under general information on each studio page listing you can check whether single or three-phase power is available.

Most studios in London will include basic photo equipment in the hire fee, such as camera stands, softboxes, poly boards, coloramas and reflectors. Kitchens will be fitted out with standard appliances such as fridge freezer, oven and hob. If you have specific requirements please remember to message the host and if they do provide additional equipment, check whether there is any additional charge.

Do I need to hire a prep kitchen separately?
